A ‘complete’ or ‘full’ denture is one which replaces all the natural teeth in either the upper or lower jaw. Whereas a ‘partial’ denture fills in the spaces left by lost or missing teeth. Most dentures are made from cobalt-chrome metal or acrylic (plastic). Dentures are removable and can be held in place by forming a seal over the gums, an adhesive can be used to provide more retention. Or the denture may incorporate clasps which attach onto your natural teeth. We work together with you over a series of appointments to design and fit a denture, that provides you with both function and comfort.

Types of Dentures

There are different types of dentures available, each designed to meet varying requirements. The most common are complete (full) dentures and partial dentures.

  • A complete denture replaces all the natural teeth in either the upper or lower jaw. If all the teeth in the jaw are missing, this is the ideal solution.
  • A partial denture, on the other hand, fills the gaps left by missing teeth. It is typically used when some natural teeth are still present in the jaw. This type of denture can prevent the remaining teeth from shifting, helping to maintain the overall structure of your mouth.

Both full and partial dentures are removable, providing flexibility in terms of cleaning and maintenance. Additionally, dentures today are made with advanced materials, making them more comfortable, durable, and natural-looking than ever before.

How Dentures Work

Dentures are designed to fit snugly over your gums, forming a seal that holds them in place. While many patients find this seal to be sufficient, others may prefer to use a denture adhesive to enhance retention and stability, especially in cases where additional security is desired.

For partial dentures, the dentures may include small clasps that attach to your remaining natural teeth, adding an extra level of support and retention. These clasps are discreet and designed to blend in with the rest of your smile, ensuring that the dentures stay securely in place while maintaining a natural appearance.

The Benefits of Dentures

Choosing dentures not only restores the functionality of your teeth but also offers several additional benefits:

  1. Improved appearance: Dentures restore the structure of your face, preventing the sunken appearance that often results from missing teeth.
  2. Enhanced chewing ability: With a properly fitted denture, you can eat a wider variety of foods, improving your overall nutrition and quality of life.
  3. Clearer speech: Dentures help support your lips and cheeks, making it easier to pronounce words clearly.
  4. Boosted confidence: A full, natural-looking smile can significantly enhance your self-esteem, making you more comfortable in social situations.
